CAPTCHA or comment moderation, but not both

CAPTCHAWhen I decide to leave a comment on a blog, I am never surprised to encounter some form of security. Granted, CAPTCHA* systems can be annoying -- you know, the devices that require one to read and type some squiggly word, or a series of numerals -- but I understand the reason for having such systems, and I use them on my blogs, too. Mostly, they protect against automated comments made by 'bots rather than humans.

Some people use comment moderation on their blogs. While in some cases it does seem to inhibit the conversational feel of comments, I can understand why some bloggers would want to review comments before they are published.

But why do people who have their blogs set up for comment moderation also use CAPTCHA systems? Isn't that overkill? I mean, if you're going to review a comment before it's published anyway, is there that much additional value in using CAPTCHA as well? Just wondering.

* In case you did not know, CAPTCHA is an acronym for "Completely Automated Turing Test To Tell Computers and Humans Apart," according the The Official CAPTCHA site.
